Corporate Legal Counsel

Job Description:

This position is an in-house legal counsel position based in Richmond for the legal department of the corporate company reporting to the Senior Management Team.   You will advise the business unit with respect to all legal matters relating to construction, contract law, major procurement, including public-private partnership projects, design-build projects and a multitude of agreements with clients, partners, subcontractors and suppliers in the construction sector.



  • As a pro-active, ethical, business-minded and out-of-the-box thinker, you will research, advise, prepare, draft, review, comment and/or negotiate complex contractual documents, and other relevant legal documentation, for local and international construction projects
  • Provide legal advice and opinion, and advice on legal risks and related issues analysis
  • Participate in the negotiation process of various contracts with clients, joint ventures, subcontractors and suppliers
  • Interpret laws, by-laws, decrees and any other document of a legal nature, ensuring that the interests of the corporation are adequately protected
  • Participate in the application and follow up of the corporations’ policies, procedures, and internal rules
  • Work closely with internal clients and management in order to maximize projects and minimize risk
  • Provide clarification on legal language or specifications to everyone in the organization
  • Maintain corporate and financial records, including filings, corporate minute books and investment agreements
  • Research legal, governmental, financial regulations, licensing agreements by which the company must abide
  • Assist with paperwork needed by various regulatory bodies and respond to requests for information
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the CEO



  • Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctor degree (LLB/JD) and Member of a Provincial Bar (BC) in good standing; and qualified to practice law in British Columbia
  • Must have commercial law background with a minimum of 5 years of relevant and demonstrable construction experience in construction law and experience in litigation
  • Fluency in both English and Mandarin preferred
  • Availability for travel (mainly but not only within Canada)
  • Proven ability to provide timely and sound legal advice, and work as part of a team, in a demanding, fast-paced and multidisciplinary environment
  • Highly developed practical and strategic business and legal sense; and
  • A good communicator, self-motivated, with a practical, methodical, detail-oriented, flexible and dynamic approach
